My local community college offers a degree in Drug Abuse Counseling (Human Services). Is it easy to find a job with a degree like this? I know just a degree in Psychology, I’ve heard, wont get a lot of good jobs in the psychology field unless your a doctor.
Im thinking about applying for this degree, any help would be appreciated.
There is a obvious need for drug abuse counselors. The question is whether there are relevant jobs. Likely employers include government organizations, health care and and social service agencies. You might want to ask around and consult with people who work in the field about prospects. Ask your college placement officer or a prof for some leads.
You likely will study psychology or other social sciences in your program, The difference is that your work will probably be focused on working in the field. You would likely work under the direction of someone with professional training in psych, social work etc.
A university undergraduate psych program is more theoretical; graduate training in clinical psych helps you apply your knowledge in the field (among other things) . Yes, you would need masters or doctoral training after an undergrad degree in psych – and admission to grad school is competitive. The advantage of advanced training is that you can function as an independent professional and get more senior jobs. (Another professional alternative is social work)
it will help, but it will take a lot more than Associate Degree
an associate wont really teach you enough about the subject and effective therapies. You could probably get a job in the field but it wont be a good position until you probably get a lot of experience. Then you might be able to go up the ladder, and not too high, since you know a master is a minimun in the psych major.
go for it man.
